February 21, 2019, A Seat at the Table SIG

Not only am I a new member to the ATD local Research Triangle Chapter, but I’m new to the talent development industry. So what better way to get my feet wet than by attending A Seat at the Table’s first meeting lead by Lynn Russell and Ken Katzeff. I found the meeting conversation thought provoking and the small group of 10 members engaging. There were no definitive solutions gained that night, but there was a lot of healthy exchange of thought, questions, testimonials and problem solving activities to prime L&D and Human Resource professionals for a productive workplace. A few of the takeaways that I gleaned from this discussion were:

    • Trainers are not fixers; their contribution should be early in the decision making process, not retroactive
    • L&D activity should not function in a silo; but be integrated into the organization’s business objectives
    • It may be necessary to learn business jargon (speak the language)
    • Everyone is in sales - learn how to sell your expertise
    • Seek clarity, ask questions about the performance indicators that can be in measured in both production and fiscally.
    • What technologies and marketing paths are most efficient and cost effective

Ultimately, I learned that L&D professionals need to evolve from just being an order taker to becoming a viable member of the discussion table. By doing so, this could create a positive ripple effect in bridging the gap between harvesting business goals/ideas and launching them.

A Seat at the Table meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 6pm – 7:30pm.
